A Hamilton resthome caregiver has admitted assaulting an elderly man she was caring for in a city rest home. However, Judge Simon Menzies held off convicting Sonali Ananta Deo in the Hamilton District Court today so an application could be filed for a discharge without conviction. Deo admitted assaulting Piri Hemi between June 9 and June 11 after his son, Allan, set up a camera in his room at Cascades Rest Home. Allan Hemi’s footage showed the 23-year-old hitting and slapping his father as he lay on his bed.

A 58-year-old senior caregiver has narrowly escaped a prison sentence after admitting stealing $32,000 of jewellery from two elderly women in a retirement home. One of the elderly women has since died. Sinei Lisiate, aka Christina Aiavao, appeared for sentencing before Judge Richard Mcilraith at Manukau District Court this week after earlier pleading guilty to two charges of theft of items over $1000. She faced a maximum penalty of seven years’ jail on each charge. Lisiate, who at the time resided in Bucklands Beach, was sentenced to six months’ community detention which means she is able to leave the house but is on a curfew. She needs to be home between the hours of 8pm and 6am Monday-Sunday. She is also under probation supervision for a year and was ordered to pay reparation of $20,000 at $20 a week. The court heard Lisiate’s first victim was an 88-year-old woman (details are suppressed) residing at the Pakuranga Park Village retirement home. The second victim at the home was 79 and has since died. Lisiate, who worked there between September 2012 and June 2016, worked night shifts. In March 2016 the first victim suffered a fall and was admitted to hospital. At 11.50pm on March 7 and 9, Lisiate entered the unit using a spare set of keys she had access to. She removed several items of jewellery including diamond and sapphire rings, bracelets and broaches valued at around $15,000.

Charges will not be laid against a community mental health service after one of its patients slipped and fell to his death. Daryl Kitto, the last surviving member of his family, was with his carers when he fell 40 metres to his death while having his photo taken in April. The 47-year-old Christchurch man was under the care of community mental health service Emerge Aotearoa when he died at Rakaia Gorge, in Mid Canterbury.

Resident doctors have threatened a nationwide strike in pursuit of demands for what their union says are “safer rosters and safer hours”. New Zealand’s resident doctors – ranging from junior house officers through to senior trainee specialists – are at the heart of medical care in public hospitals. Strikes by them cause major disruption. The planned strike will be a complete withdrawal of labour from 7am on Tuesday October 18 until 7am on Thursday October 20. All 20 district health boards will be affected by the action by members of the Resident Doctors Association.

A former Hawke’s Bay trainee doctor duped two district health boards into revealing confidential medical information about members of his family without their consent. Hirron Fernando then used the information from the Capital & Coast and Hawke’s Bay DHBs as evidence in a UK court case against the two family members. Staff at the DHBs were appalled and apologetic when they realised Fernando had deceived them into breaching privacy by falsely claiming he was treating the pair, a tribunal has heard. Details of the scam emerged on Monday at a Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal hearing in Hastings where Fernando was found guilty of professional misconduct and struck off the medical register.

Registered Nurse and elected DHB Board member Fiona Samuel is seeking a fourth Wairarapa District Health Board term.
